Better Pitch Calling Starts Here

Hey There, Friend!

Today I want to help you strengthen the connection between your pitcher and the person calling her game—because when those two are in sync, great things can happen on the field.

Let me ask you a few quick questions:

  • Does your pitcher ever struggle in games because she’s not throwing her best stuff against hitters?

  • Is the same pitch-calling strategy used for every pitcher on the team—without factoring in their unique strengths?

  • Has your pitcher ever had a real conversation with her pitch caller about what she’s most confident throwing?

If any of these hit home, I’ve got something that could make an immediate impact on your pitcher’s in-game performance.

Why Communication Matters

Opening the line of communication between your pitcher and her pitch caller (whether it’s a coach or catcher) can build trust, boost confidence, and lead to smarter, more successful pitch calling.

And I have a simple way to help them start that conversation.

A Quick “Assignment” That Can Change the Game

This is something I ask my pitchers to complete during the pre-season—and now I’m sharing it with you.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Download and print the Self-Assessment & Pitch Caller Assessment worksheet.

  2. Have your pitcher complete Page 1 on her own.

  3. Give Page 2 to the person who calls her pitches and have them fill it out separately.

  4. Once both are done, have them sit down together to compare answers, talk through any differences, and get aligned on a plan moving forward.

What This Does

This simple assignment opens the door to a meaningful conversation about pitch strategy, strengths, confidence, and game-day execution.

âś… It helps pitch callers understand what the pitcher feels best throwing
âś… It helps pitchers feel heard and respected
âś… And it creates a shared plan for how to attack hitters—together

It’s a small investment that can lead to big-time improvements in performance and trust!

Give it a Try!

I’d love to hear how it goes! If you try this assignment with your pitcher and her pitch caller, shoot me a message and let me know what they discovered.
